Daly City's northern edge is San Francisco itself. The city runs against San Francisco along its whole northern edge, so a bed here is a bed on the rim of the larger city, with the San Francisco Zoo, the Legion of Honor and the California Academy of Sciences all reachable without ever booking a night inside San Francisco itself. That is the argument for the northern strip.
Rooms on that side suit anyone whose days point at museums. South is the other direction. The rest of Daly City faces down the Peninsula into San Mateo County, and a room on that flank makes sense for a trip that keeps going south rather than one that spends every morning turning back north.
Twenty square kilometres is not much ground. Wherever the room sits the far edge of the city is minutes off, and the real choice is between the pull of the San Francisco boundary and the quiet behind it. The Mount Davidson cross rises beyond the boundary.
A bed on that side of Daly City puts Saint Ignatius Church, the Randall Museum and Mission San Francisco de Asís within the same short run as the rest of San Mateo County.

The name comes from a landowner. John Donald Daly was a businessman who held ground on this stretch of the Peninsula, and the city that grew across it took his name rather than the name of any older settlement or mission. Daly's name stuck; the year the city was founded did not.
What the record does carry is rank: only one city in San Mateo County is larger than Daly City. San Francisco supplies the older layer. Mission San Francisco de Asís keeps the Spanish name the neighbouring city carries, and the Abner Phelps House, Woodward's Gardens and The Chutes of San Francisco fill out the older San Francisco register that runs along Daly City's northern edge.
Memorials came later. The Garfield Monument, the William McKinley Memorial and the California Volunteers commemorate people and events rather than housing anything, and the Holocaust Memorial at California Palace of the Legion of Honor marks a twentieth-century loss. The balance shifted afterwards.

That is a tight footprint for a city of its rank, and all of it lies within an easy run of the San Francisco Zoo and the Mount Davidson cross on the far side of the boundary.
What is the climate of Daly City?
The Peninsula sets the terms. Daly City lies in the temperate band of the northern hemisphere, on ground narrow enough that no part of this end of San Mateo County stands far from open water, which holds the seasonal swings inside a modest range. Height changes the reading.
The land rises inland towards the ground the Mount Davidson cross stands on, and conditions up there run cooler than they do down at the San Francisco boundary.
How do you get to Daly City?
Everything arrives through San Francisco. The city shares its whole northern boundary with San Francisco, so the roads running down the Peninsula from the larger city cross into Daly City before they reach anywhere else in San Mateo County. Nothing within Daly City lies far apart.
From the south, the run up the Peninsula arrives here last, and anyone heading for the San Francisco Zoo or the California Academy of Sciences carries on over the line into San Francisco.
