The Empire Polo Club decides a good deal of it. Rooms near the polo grounds are the ones that fill when the turf is in use, and from that side the flat floor of the Coachella Valley opens west toward Palm Springs and east into open country. Golf pulls the other way.
The PGA West Stadium Course lies within the same city, and beds around the fairways trade the polo crowd for early tee times on quieter ground. Distances here are driving distances. Nothing in Indio is far in the way a city centre is far, yet the Colorado Desert spreads everything out, so a car is what separates reaching the polo grounds, the golf, and the rest of central Riverside County from staying put.
Pick the polo side if you want the fields on foot. Position is the other argument for basing here: Palm Springs sits about 23 miles west, Los Angeles about 125 miles further on in the same line, and Blythe lies about 98 miles east across the desert, which puts a wide sweep of the region within a day's driving. Beds thin past the built-up ground.

Los Angeles lay about 125 miles off to the west and Blythe about 98 miles east, which left the valley a long way from either and obliged the settlement to supply itself. Central Riverside County formed around it. Bare desert gave way in patches to irrigated fields, and the line between the watered ground and the dry ground remains the clearest division in the landscape.
Two of those patches now bring most of the visitors. The Empire Polo Club laid its playing fields on watered turf and the PGA West Stadium Course did the same for golf, neither of them possible in the Colorado Desert without the valley's engineered supply. Palm Springs grew as the western anchor of the Coachella Valley about 23 miles away, and the two cities have split the valley between them since.
Indio took the eastern end. Southern California filled in around both, though the desert beyond the last irrigated field looks much as it did before 1873.
