Where to stay in Redondo Beach

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Distance from Santa Monica Bay is the only variable that really moves here. Redondo Beach is small enough that the choice comes down to beach or inland. A room on the blocks facing the southern portion of the bay puts the sand at the end of the street, which is the whole point for most people who choose one of the three beach cities over anywhere else in Los Angeles County.

Rates follow that logic closely. Inland the calculation changes. Redondo Beach Public Library sits back among the ordinary streets, and a base near it swaps the sea view for shorter errands and a quieter night, which suits longer stays better than a weekend does.

Riviera United Methodist Church marks that quieter half of the city's named list. Diamond Apartments and the Sweetser Residence stand as the older domestic architecture in the same inland grid, and anyone drawn to what the South Bay looked like before Greater Los Angeles reached this far will want to be within walking distance of them. The whole city is walkable anyway.

Neighbouring beach cities run north and south along the same shoreline, so a base here works as well for the strip as a whole as it does for Redondo Beach on its own.

About Redondo Beach

The coast is the whole proposition.

What is Redondo Beach known for?

Redondo Beach takes up a stretch of the South Bay shoreline inside Greater Los Angeles, one of three adjacent beach cities strung along the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay, and the water is what almost every visit organises itself around. Redondo Beach Public Library anchors the civic end. Diamond Apartments and the Sweetser Residence are among the named buildings inland of the sand.

What are the main landmarks in Redondo Beach?

The named list is short. Redondo Beach Public Library carries the civic end of it, while Diamond Apartments and the Sweetser Residence stand for the older domestic architecture that survived as the South Bay filled in around them. Riviera United Methodist Church completes it.

Everything else here is shoreline, the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay running the length of the city's western edge inside Los Angeles County.

What is the history of Redondo Beach?

What the record keeps here is mostly architectural. Redondo Beach grew as one of three adjacent beach cities along the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay, so its past is tied to a shared shoreline rather than to any inland industry, crossing or mine. Diamond Apartments and the Sweetser Residence survive from the decades when the South Bay was filling in, two pieces of domestic building that the city's protected list still carries.

Little else from that period is listed. Institutions followed the houses. Riviera United Methodist Church stands among the congregations that established themselves as the neighbourhoods thickened, and Redondo Beach Public Library represents the civic half of the same growth, the point at which a shoreline settlement takes on the apparatus of a proper city.

Los Angeles County drew the whole South Bay into Greater Los Angeles as that expansion ran on, which makes the later story here less the city's own than the region's, shared with the two beach cities immediately beside it. The shoreline never changed role. Whatever went up inland, the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay stayed the reason people arrived and the reason they remained, and the named buildings behind it read as by-products of a place that grew up facing open water.

Where is Redondo Beach?

The city occupies the western edge of Los Angeles County, facing the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay. The South Bay surrounds it inland. Two other beach cities sit immediately alongside on the same strip of shore, and the whole of it belongs to Greater Los Angeles, which places Redondo Beach inside one of the largest urban regions anywhere while leaving it directly on open water.

Its own streets cover little ground.

What is the climate of Redondo Beach?

Santa Monica Bay does the moderating. Water lies directly off the city, which keeps the warm months easier here than in the parts of Los Angeles County that sit further back from the shore, and keeps the cool months from ever turning severe. Distance from the sea is small.

Beach days work across a long stretch of the year in the South Bay, and the bay is the reason the range between the seasons stays narrow.

How do you get to Redondo Beach?

Almost everyone comes from inland. Redondo Beach sits at the seaward end of Greater Los Angeles, so approaches run west across Los Angeles County until the road runs out at the southern portion of Santa Monica Bay. Traffic is the constant.

Once inside the city the distances collapse, and Redondo Beach Public Library, Diamond Apartments and the Sweetser Residence all fall within the same compact grid between the inland streets and the sand.
