Casa de Esperanza sits among them. San Onofre State Beach opens a long protected stretch beyond the built town, and a base at that end trades the shops and the Spanish Colonial Revival streets for open shoreline and quieter ground. The Ocean Institute pulls the other way.

What is the history of San Clemente?
San Clemente took its name in 1925, borrowed from the Spanish colonial island, and the town that followed was built to look the part from the start. Spanish Colonial Revival was the rule. The Richard Egan House, the Goldschmidt House, and the Carl Stroschein House are the private addresses the register later picked up, three names among the town's early stock of Spanish Colonial Revival building.
Commerce left the Oscar Easley Block and Hotel San Clemente, and Casa de Esperanza carries a Spanish name into the same list. The sea did the rest. San Clemente Beach Club put the shoreline at the centre of the town's public life, and the hospitality trade that grew around the beaches became the industry the city is best known for outside Orange County.

Spanish Village by the Sea stuck as the slogan, and it still describes a place whose plan, colour, and habits all point at the shoreline.
