What is the history of San Fernando?
Before the Spanish came, the land of San Fernando lay in the northwestern part of Tovaangar, the homeland of the Tongva, with the Tataviam to the north and the Chumash to the west; nearby Pasheeknga was the valley's most populous village. The Mission San Fernando Rey de España was founded in 1797 at Achooykomenga, a rancho worked by Chumash, Tongva, and Tataviam labourers. Roughly seven in ten of the native children baptized at the mission died in childhood.
Mexico secularized the mission in 1833. In 1846 the land became part of Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando. Charles Maclay bought much of it in 1874 and founded the Maclay School of Theology in 1885.
