Staying in the Barbary Coast puts you at the seam of the Financial District, Chinatown, and North Beach, a few minutes' walk from the Embarcadero piers. Beds are scarce inside it. The old streets around Jackson Square hold design showrooms and offices rather than hotels, so most visitors book in the neighbouring Financial District or along Broadway and walk in for the bars and restaurants.
Choose the area for late nights and a central base, with Coit Tower and Sydney Walton Square within easy reach. For a quieter room, look uphill toward the Cable Car Museum.

The Barbary Coast sits within walking distance of some of San Francisco's best-known sights. Two hills frame it. Coit Tower crowns Telegraph Hill to the north, while the switchbacks of Lombard Street twist down Russian Hill just beyond.
On the Chinatown edge stand Old Saint Mary's Cathedral and the Cable Car Museum, and North Beach holds Saints Peter and Paul Church above Washington Square. Closer in, Sydney Walton Square opens a lawn by the old produce blocks, and the Mechanics Monument marks the Financial District to the south. Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, a small French church, stands nearby on Bush Street.
What is the history of Barbary Coast?
The district took shape during the Gold Rush of 1849, when ships emptied their crews into San Francisco and a strip of saloons, gambling halls, and brothels grew along Pacific Street. Waterfront crimps drugged sailors and shanghaied them aboard outbound vessels. Writers borrowed the name from the pirate coast of North Africa, and it stuck.
The earthquake and fire of 1906 levelled much of the quarter, and a decade of reform campaigns and the state's Red-Light Abatement Act closed its brothels by 1917. The surviving brick buildings around Jackson Square later became an antiques and design district. They are the city's oldest commercial blocks.
Where is Barbary Coast?
The Barbary Coast fills the low ground between Telegraph Hill and the Financial District, a step inland from the Embarcadero. Pacific Avenue runs through its core. Broadway marks the noisy northern edge, Montgomery Street closes it to the west, and Chinatown climbs the slope just beyond.
North Beach begins a few blocks north around Saints Peter and Paul Church, while Sydney Walton Square anchors the flat eastern end near the piers.
