About The Castro
What are the main landmarks in The Castro?
The Castro's landmarks are more about community than grand monuments. The GLBT Historical Society keeps an archive and museum of queer history in the heart of the district, and Most Holy Redeemer Church has long served as an affirming Catholic parish here. St. Francis Lutheran Church sits nearby.
On the high ground above the valley, the Randall Museum pairs nature exhibits with a wide view over the city. A short walk east, in the Mission District, Mission San Francisco de Asis survives as the oldest standing building in San Francisco.
What is the history of The Castro?
For much of its early life the Castro was a working-class quarter of Eureka Valley, lined with Victorian houses built after San Francisco spread west. Then it changed. Through the 1960s and 1970s a large gay community settled in, drawn by low rents and an open social scene, and the neighborhood grew into one of the first gay districts in the United States.
It became a hub of activism and community life, from bars and bookstores to churches like Most Holy Redeemer Church. The GLBT Historical Society preserves the records of that history.
Where is The Castro?
The Castro occupies the western part of Eureka Valley, one of the small valleys folded into the center of San Francisco. Just east, and lower down, sits the Mission District, while wooded high ground rises to the west and holds the Randall Museum. The neighborhood is compact.
Its streets climb steadily as they leave the valley floor.
