What is the history of Presidio of San Francisco?
Spanish soldiers founded the Presidio as a frontier garrison in 1776, planting one of the empire's northernmost outposts on the California coast. Control passed to Mexico after independence, then to the United States Army in 1846. For nearly a century and a half the post served as a major Army base, guarding the entrance to San Francisco Bay through two world wars.
The Army stood down its garrison, and in 1994 the land transferred to the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A working fort became a public park.
