About Haight-Ashbury
What are the main landmarks in Haight-Ashbury?
Most of Haight-Ashbury's set-piece sights sit at its edges rather than along its own residential streets, so the neighborhood's draw is really its street life. To the west, inside Golden Gate Park, stand the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. The de Young is operated by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Just east, on Corona Heights, sits the Randall Museum. Monuments are not its main draw.
What is the history of Haight-Ashbury?
Haight-Ashbury takes its name from the crossing of Haight Street and Ashbury Street. From those two names come its nicknames, the Haight and the Upper Haight. During the 1960s the neighborhood grew into one of the principal centers of the counterculture movement.
That reputation stuck. Its standing in San Francisco rests on that decade more than on any single monument.
Where is Haight-Ashbury?
The district lies west of downtown San Francisco, in the city's center-west, and takes its name from the crossing of Haight Street and Ashbury Street. Golden Gate Park forms its western boundary. Across that edge stand the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum and the California Academy of Sciences.
The main commercial strip, the Upper Haight, follows Haight Street itself.
