What is the history of Fisherman's Wharf?
The waterfront began as the base of San Francisco's fishing fleet, and the crews working the bay landed the catch that gave the Wharf both its name and its long trade in seafood. Fishing boats still work the piers. Much of that maritime past survives a short walk west, where the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park keeps historic ships along Hyde Street Pier.
The USS Pampanito, a World War II submarine, was later berthed at Pier 45 as a museum ship.
