Where to stay in West Hollywood

How the choice of base plays out on the ground.

West Hollywood is dense and walkable, built on small lots and a street grid with a Walk Score of 91, and its life runs along a few corridors. The Sunset Strip is the loud one. Its restaurants, saloons, and nightclubs have drawn visitors for decades, and late evenings start there.

Santa Monica Boulevard is the second main corridor. The city as a whole is the centre of Southern California gay culture, nightlife included. Design has a quarter of its own: buyers head for the Avenues of Art and Design, the stretch of Melrose Avenue between Fairfax Avenue and Doheny Drive, with Robertson Boulevard and Beverly Boulevard close by.

The residential pockets, the Norma Triangle and West Hollywood West among them, are only a few blocks across, and the main streets nearby put daily needs within walking distance. Beverly Hills begins at the western edge.

What is West Hollywood known for?

It is also the epicentre of LGBTQ culture in Los Angeles County. Interior-design showrooms gather on the Avenues of Art and Design along Robertson Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and Beverly Boulevard, and the Pacific Design Center has traditionally hosted the Elton John AIDS Foundation's Academy Awards party.

The Schindler House, Rudolph Schindler's modernist home of 1922, stands inside West Hollywood. The Sunset Tower, a hotel from 1929, the Hacienda Arms Apartments of 1927, the Patio del Moro apartments by Arthur and Nina Zwebell, and Colonial House, a seven-story Colonial Revival building by Leland A. Bryant, are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ross Montgomery designed St. Ambrose Church.

The Sunset Marquis Hotel on Alta Loma Road keeps its Whisky Bar, and The Gauntlet, the first body-piercing business in the United States, opened its first shop on Santa Monica Boulevard in 1978.

What is the history of West Hollywood?

The Tongva lived in the Los Angeles Basin around West Hollywood for centuries before the Portolá expedition passed in August 1769, collecting pitch from the tar seeps nearby to waterproof its gear. By 1780 the road that became the Sunset Strip linked El Pueblo de Los Angeles with the ranches to the west. Most of the land later formed part of Rancho La Brea.

Moses Sherman and his partners of the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad founded the town of Sherman on the site of West Hollywood, with the line's shops, yards, and car barns, and railroad workers settled around them. Sherman refused annexation by Los Angeles. In 1925 it took the informal name West Hollywood, while staying under county rule.

Gambling, illegal in Los Angeles but legal in the county, brought casinos and nightclubs to Sunset Boulevard in the 1920s, and people in the film business followed. In the late 1960s the Strip became a centre of hippie culture and music publishing. Incorporation came in 1984, when gay men, Russian Jews, and older people joined forces to keep rent control, and the first council had an openly gay majority.

West Hollywood lies in Los Angeles County, California, between Beverly Hills to the west and the Los Angeles neighbourhoods of Hollywood Hills to the north, Hollywood to the east, the Fairfax District to the southeast, and Beverly Grove to the southwest. West Hollywood's boundary is irregular. It took shape from unincorporated county land that the cities around it never absorbed, and the outline appears in the city's logo.
