Hotel Woodland and the Woodland Opera House sit close enough together that the blocks between them are the obvious place to sleep, and a room in that stretch turns an evening performance into a walk rather than a drive. The Yolo County Courthouse is around the corner. Anyone here on county business, or on a theatre trip, gets the whole reason for the visit inside a few hundred metres, which is rare in a Sacramento Valley city built mostly for cars.
The motels sit further out along the approach roads. They cost less, they park easily, and they put Reiff's Antique Gas Station Automotive Museum and the open farmland of Yolo County closer than the centre does, which suits travellers moving through rather than stopping. Two nights is usually enough.
Woodland rewards a slow half-day around the Gibson Mansion, the Porter Building and the Walnut Street School, and then hands the rest of the itinerary back to the region. Sacramento is the fallback with real depth. Twenty-four kilometres separate the two, so a bed in the larger city costs a short drive each way and buys the range of hotels, restaurants and connections that a county seat of this size cannot hold on its own.
Weekends around the opera house programme fill first. Book those early, and keep the R. H. Beamer House and the courthouse blocks in mind when choosing between a central room and a cheaper one on the edge.

Becoming the seat of Yolo County settled Woodland's future long before its size did. A city founded in 1871 and given the county's administration acquired a courthouse, a bar, a records office and the professional class that comes with them, and the Yolo County Courthouse is the building where all of that still concentrates. Government brought money in.
The Gibson Mansion and the R. H. Beamer House are what that money looked like when it was spent on private houses. The Sacramento Valley supplied the rest. Grain and orchard land around the city produced the trade that filled the Porter Building and paid for Hotel Woodland, and a farming county with a well-off county seat is the specific combination that explains a downtown of this quality in a place of this size.
The Woodland Opera House belongs to that moment. A city confident enough to build a theatre was a city that expected to keep growing, and the building survived long enough to be worth restoring rather than replacing. Schooling and the motor age left the last two marks.
Walnut Street School stands for the civic provision of the older decades, while Reiff's Antique Gas Station Automotive Museum preserves the roadside fittings of the era that reoriented every Sacramento Valley town toward the highway. Sacramento pulled hard from 24 km away. Woodland ended up inside a metropolitan area without ever surrendering the courthouse, the opera house or the street pattern it laid out in the 1870s.
