Black Hammock Island has no hotel along Sawpit Road, the road that runs its length. Beds sit off the island. The campground at Little Talbot Island State Park lies east on State Road A1A, though the drive there runs the long way round by Cedar Point Road, New Berlin Road, and Heckscher Drive.
Hotels cluster west by Jacksonville International Airport, near Interstate 95. Book here only if you came for the boat ramp at Cedar Point.

What are the main landmarks in Black Hammock Island?
Cedar Point holds the south end of Black Hammock Island, some four hundred acres of upland hammock and salt marsh kept by the National Park Service. The Fitzpatrick Trailhead and the Black Hammock Island Trailhead open off Cedar Point Road, and a wooden bridge over Pumpkin Hill Creek carries walkers between the city preserve and the federal ground. A boat ramp works the marsh edge.
Sawpit Road runs the island end to end, past lanes named for the catch: Croaker, Shellcracker, Flounder, Bream, and Red Bass.
What is the history of Black Hammock Island?
Black Hammock Island held a Spanish mission from 1684, when Mocama and Yamassee refugees from St. Simons Island rebuilt Santa Cruz y San Buenaventura de Guadalquini at Cedar Point. Its people joined San Juan del Puerto before 1697, and Carolina raiders under James Moore burned both missions in 1702. William Fitzpatrick took a Spanish grant at Cedar Point in 1795, and a creek west of the point still carries his name.
Union gunboats destroyed the salt works there in October 1862. A pine plantation followed. Excavation at the Cedar Point site has traced occupation back more than four thousand years.
