What is the history of North Loop?
North Loop began as the warehouse and freight quarter of Minneapolis, a name drawn from the rail loop that once curved through its streets. The trains came first. Goods moved off the Mississippi River and into brick storehouses that filled the ground between the water and downtown Minneapolis during the milling and railroad decades of the district's growth.
Later the freight faded. The warehouses stayed, and the Warehouse District name stuck to the blocks that remained.
