Rooms are rare on the streets around St. James the Greater Catholic Church. Most visitors book instead beyond the northern boundary, near the Forest Park institutions, then walk or drive the short distance down into the neighbourhood for an evening on its Irish blocks. The Hill begins at Dogtown's southeastern edge.
Museum mornings favour the side nearest Forest Park, where the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum stand within easy reach, while the quieter southern streets toward The Hill suit longer and slower stays.

The Charles S. and Mary Warder Rannells House is the neighbourhood's listed survivor. Bigger draws sit over the northern line in Forest Park, where the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Science Center gather in one green sweep. The Saint Louis Zoo keeps the Monsanto Insectarium, and the James S. McDonnell Planetarium stands near the Jefferson Memorial.
St. James the Greater Catholic Church anchors Dogtown. St. Ambrose Church serves The Hill. It stands along the southeastern edge, a short way beyond the boundary.
What is the history of Dogtown?
Irish families gave Dogtown its character. The parish of St. James the Greater Catholic Church became the fixed point of that settlement, and the surrounding blocks have carried the neighbourhood's Irish identity ever since. Italian St. Louis grew alongside it.
The Hill took shape on the far side of the southeastern boundary, and the traditionally Italian section has bordered Dogtown across that same line. Dogtown still names a Steward; Doxie Phillips took the post in 2020.
