What is the history of Dutchtown?
The name is a mishearing. Dutchtown carries a rendering of Deutsch, the German word for German, and in the early 19th century these blocks formed the southern center of German-American settlement in St. Louis. Institutions came with the settlers.
Concordia Seminary, Concordia Publishing House and Lutheran Hospital were all founded on this ground, and the German Cultural Society keeps its headquarters in the neighborhood.
