The Chuck Berry House is the address most visitors cross the city for. It sits inside the forty-two blocks, as does the Dr. Herman S. Dreer House, and both are marks of the professional and musical lives the neighbourhood produced while it led Black St. Louis. Antioch Baptist Church keeps the congregational side.

The art museums people name when they say St. Louis lie well south of Martin Luther King Drive, so the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis belong to a different errand entirely.

What is the history of The Ville?

Between 1911 and 1950 The Ville held the centre of African-American culture in St. Louis, and the shops along its streets were Black-owned at a time when Black owners had almost no ground elsewhere in the city. Both dates are firm. The Chuck Berry House and the Dr. Herman S. Dreer House survive from it, two of the addresses that outlasted the era.

Antioch Baptist Church belongs to the same record. What the forty-two blocks between Sarah and Taylor built was a whole civic life inside four street edges, because the wider city offered none.
