Term-time visitors take the same rooms for the campus that commuters take for the trains, so two quite separate demands compete for a thin supply in the same few streets. Away from the avenue the streets are residential and quiet. Rooms out there sit closer to Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church, the Woodruff House and Boxwood Hall, which suits a visit built on the older buildings, though it puts the platform past a comfortable walk and hands the day back to the car.
Nothing in Union is far. Traffic crossing Union County passes through at most hours, so a room chosen for quiet is worth checking against the road it actually stands on, since one block either way makes the whole difference between a good night and a poor one.

What is the history of Union?
Names outlast functions here. Boxwood Hall, the Woodruff House and Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church survive as the township's fixed points, and the last of those keeps the name Connecticut Farms in its own title long after the working farms it refers to stopped setting the terms of the place. The record gives 2003 as the founding year.
Buildings considerably older than that date stand within the township all the same. The railway is the other fixed point. Union station on Green Lane tied the township into the network NJ Transit works, with the Raritan Valley Line running between High Bridge and Newark Penn Station and some services carrying on to New York Penn Station, which makes Union as much a point on that line as a place in its own right.
Kean University brought a second kind of traffic to the same streets. The station carries a dedication to the late Congressman Bob Franks, the sort of civic memory a commuter township keeps when it has no monuments to spare, while St. John's Episcopal Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth hold what remains of the older record. Union County has grown around all of it.

Morris Avenue is the spine of it. The township spreads either side of that road inside Union County, with the Kean University campus taking a large share of the ground near Green Lane and the tracks of the Raritan Valley Line cutting a straight course of their own through the middle. The campus, the avenue and the railway divide the place between them.

The year runs temperate and northern, heat through the middle months and cold at either end, with nothing between the township and the weather to soften either extreme. Seasons show on the platform.
