Sandy lies just south of the larger city, close enough that a bed here still reaches everything in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, and it sits within the Wasatch Range rather than out on flat ground. Neither choice is far.
Anyone whose days run to the Sandy Historic District, the Sandy City Bank, and the John and Mary Mattson House will find them all on foot from a room in the older part of the city. The older streets are compact. Sandy was founded in 1871, and the Sandy Historic District preserves the shape of that first settlement, which means a stay chosen for the buildings can be walked from end to end without a car.
Salt Lake County holds the rest of the region, and a room further out from the Sandy Tithing Office and the Allsop-Jensen House trades the walk for a drive. Both work. If you want the Wasatch Range at close range, stay in Sandy and take Salt Lake City as the day trip; if you want the city, reverse it and come out to the Brady-Brady House and the Emma Olive Dobbs House for an afternoon.

Salt Lake City grew toward it.
