What is the history of Belltown?
Belltown carries the name of William Bell, one of the Denny Party settlers who staked claims on Seattle's shore in the early 1850s. The ground here was not always flat. In the early twentieth century, engineers sluiced away Denny Hill in the Denny Regrade, washing the slope into Elliott Bay and leaving the level blocks the neighborhood fills.
Warehouses and low rents later drew artists and galleries, before apartment towers rose across the regraded grid.
Where is Belltown?
Belltown's grid of numbered avenues runs from First Avenue near the Elliott Bay waterfront inland to the edge of the Denny Triangle. Denny Way forms its northern boundary, separating it from Seattle Center and the Space Needle. To the south, the district blends into the downtown retail core near Pike Place Market.
