About Capitol Hill
What are the main landmarks in Capitol Hill?
Capitol Hill's best-known cultural stop is the Seattle Asian Art Museum, set inside Volunteer Park at the neighborhood's north end. The park itself pulls crowds to its conservatory, lawns, and brick water tower. Religious landmarks stand out too.
St. Joseph's Church, a prominent Catholic parish, rises over the eastern blocks, and just south on adjacent First Hill the Frye Art Museum shows its collection free of charge. Seattle's marquee sights, the Space Needle and the Seattle Great Wheel, sit downtown, a short trip west.
What is the history of Capitol Hill?
Capitol Hill took shape in the late 1880s as Seattle spread east onto the ridge above its waterfront. Streetcar lines climbed the hill. They turned it into one of the city's early residential districts, lined with large timber houses along the northern avenues, and Volunteer Park was laid out as its central green space.
The building that became the Seattle Asian Art Museum opened in the park in the 1930s. Over the following decades Broadway and the Pike/Pine corridor grew into the nightlife center they remain, on a hill first named in the hope it would host the state capitol.
Where is Capitol Hill?
The district occupies a hill directly east of Downtown Seattle and Interstate 5, which forms its western edge. First Hill lies to the south, the Central District to the southeast, and Montlake and the Lake Washington shore sit off to the northeast. Broadway runs north-south through the middle, while the Pike/Pine corridor angles down toward the city center.
