What is the history of Fremont?
Fremont grew up as a mill town at the north end of Lake Union, where timber moved on the water before the ship canal was cut through. Seattle absorbed the settlement in 1891, and streetcars soon tied it to the wider city. Industry held the waterfront for decades.
As mills and factories thinned, the neighborhood drew artists into the cheap old buildings, and public art took hold along the streets. Woodland Park, on the northern edge, passed from a private estate into the city's hands and became the grounds of Woodland Park Zoo.
Where is Fremont?
Fremont occupies the north shore of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, where the waterway narrows into the channel known as the Fremont Cut. Wallingford lies across Stone Way to the east, and Ballard picks up to the west past Leary Way. Woodland Park and its zoo close off the north, toward Phinney Ridge and Green Lake.
