The neighborhood grew up around the University of Washington after the campus settled on the ground above Union Bay. Denny Field came first. It served as the university's early athletic ground, and its games shaped the sporting culture that Husky Ballpark carries on.
Professors and families filled the surrounding blocks, leaving a record in houses like the William Parsons House and the surviving 1926 Model Brick Home. Congregations followed, raising University Presbyterian Church and the University Methodist Temple along the new streets.
Where is University District?
The neighborhood occupies the ground between Portage Bay and the rise north toward Ravenna. Its streets form a tidy grid. Interstate 5 walls off the western side and separates it from Wallingford, while the University of Washington campus and Union Bay close the eastern flank along the water.
University Way NE, the street everyone shortens to the Ave, runs the length of the commercial core, and to the south the Lake Washington Ship Canal cuts it off from Montlake.
