Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Lake Winnebago decides the good rooms. Water-facing beds take the open horizon of the lake and whatever weather arrives across it, which is what the premium buys, and they leave Menominee Park and the Oshkosh Public Museum a short drive rather than a step away. The lake is the whole argument for the extra spend.
Everything else here is negotiable. The Fox River side works differently. Rooms along the river and toward Lake Butte des Morts put the old water route through the city at the door, with Trinity Episcopal Church and the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church among the older buildings within reach of them.
Then there is the airport question. Anyone travelling for EAA Airventure books toward Wittman Regional Airport or accepts a drive in from wherever in Winnebago County a bed can still be found, because that week runs on rules of its own. Menominee Park Zoo suits a family stay.
Distances stay small either way, and a car parked once tends to stay parked, since most of what Oshkosh asks a visitor to see sits within a few square kilometres of the water.
About Oshkosh
Aviation put the name abroad.
What is Oshkosh known for?
EAA Airventure fills Wittman Regional Airport once a year and turns a mid-sized lake city into an aviation capital for the duration, which is the single fact most outsiders know about Oshkosh. Clothing did the rest of the work. The Oshkosh b'gosh label carried the name onto shirts far from Wisconsin, and Lake Winnebago supplies what the city actually looks like on the weeks when nothing is flying.
What are the main landmarks in Oshkosh?
Four congregations hold the older ground. Trinity Episcopal Church, the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church are the listed church buildings, and their number in a city of this size is itself a piece of evidence. The Oshkosh Public Museum keeps the collections.
Menominee Park Zoo takes the children, and Wittman Regional Airport takes the aircraft.
What is the history of Oshkosh?
The founding is dated to 1818. A settlement on the Fox River between Lake Butte des Morts and Lake Winnebago stood on the water route rather than merely beside it, which counted for more than anything else in the decades before roads, and the city grew at the point where passage between the two lakes had to be made. Winnebago County took its seat here.
The choice held. County business has run from the city since, alongside the wider Fox Cities region it belongs to. Congregations built early and often.
Trinity Episcopal Church, the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church between them record four separate bodies in one modest city, which is the plainest surviving evidence of who settled this stretch of shore. Two names then carried Oshkosh outward. The Oshkosh b'gosh label put the word on clothing sold far from Wisconsin, and EAA Airventure at Wittman Regional Airport made the city a fixture of the aviation calendar, so it is known abroad for a garment and a gathering rather than for its own streets.
The Oshkosh Public Museum keeps the local version of the story.
Where is Oshkosh?
Two lakes, one river between them. Oshkosh covers about seventy square kilometres along the Fox River, which runs between Lake Butte des Morts and Lake Winnebago, so the built-up area follows a waterway instead of gathering around a single square. Winnebago County is the metropolitan area entire.
The Fox Cities region takes the city in as well.
What is the climate of Oshkosh?
Lake Winnebago is the local moderator. Water of that width holds its heat well into the autumn and hands it back slowly, so the shore and the inland streets of Winnebago County need not read the same on the same afternoon. Wind is the other factor.
Oshkosh sits in the temperate band north of the equator, which means four separate seasons and a packing list that changes completely between them.
How do you get to Oshkosh?
Wittman Regional Airport is the way in with wings. It carries the EAA Airventure traffic and gives Oshkosh an air link that a city of this size would not otherwise keep, while outside that week most arrivals come by road along the Fox River corridor. Winnebago County is compact.
Beds, the Oshkosh Public Museum and Menominee Park Zoo sit within minutes of one another once the car is off the through route.
