What is the history of Fergana?
Fergana is a young city in an ancient valley. The Fergana Valley has been farmed and fought over for thousands of years, famed in old China for its heavenly horses, but the town itself is new. The Russians built the city.
When the Tsar's armies took the valley in the eighteen-seventies, they laid out a garrison and garden city on the plain, with wide avenues fanning out from a central park. The valley made it a city of cotton and silk. Fergana grew as the centre of the great cotton lands of the valley, and the silk of Margilan and the pottery of Rishton were traded through its markets.
Learning has old roots here. The valley gave the world the astronomer al-Farghani, known in the west as Alfraganus, whose name is now honoured with a memorial in the city, and Fergana kept its parks and its leafy streets through the years. The avenues still run green.

Fergana has a warm, dry continental climate sheltered by the ranges. Hot summers and mild winters cross the valley floor, milder than the open steppe for its ring of mountains, with little rain and long sunny days. The summers run hot and dry.

Fergana lies in the far east of Uzbekistan, over the mountains from Tashkent. Roads and flights link it to Tashkent across the passes, and highways run on to the other valley cities. Lanes run out to the silk towns.
