He was president of the Transvaal at the time, and attaching his name to a new mining town on the western reef made the founding an act of the state rather than a private venture. Municipal independence did not last. Krugersdorp no longer has a government of its own, having been integrated into Mogale City Local Municipality along with the towns around it, and the arrangement left it as the seat of government for Mogale City rather than as a municipality in its own right.
