Innere Stadt, Graz — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Innere Stadt is the first district of Graz, the Old Town quarter holding the Schloßberg, the Stadtpark and Graz Cathedral.

About Innere Stadt

Where to stay in Innere Stadt

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Innere Stadt is small enough to walk end to end. Rooms near Jakominiplatz sit at the district's outer boundary, handy for anyone reaching the district from the Radetzkystraße, while the lanes under the Schloßberg give the quieter beds and the shorter climb to the hill. The Stadtpark side is greener still.

Along the Mur between the Radetzkybrücke and the Keplerbrücke the Kunsthaus Graz fills the view, and the Glacis and Wickenburggasse mark where the old district gives way to the rest of the city.

About Innere Stadt

What are the main landmarks in Innere Stadt?

Few districts carry this much. Graz Cathedral and the Katharinenkirche und Mausoleum stand together at the ecclesiastical core, with the Franciscan Church, the Stadtpfarrkirche, the Dreifaltigkeitskirche and the Stiegenkirche filling out a dense run of older foundations. The Styrian Armoury stands apart.

Museums take the rest of the ground: the Universalmuseum Joanneum and its Neue Galerie, the Altes Joanneum, the Graz Museum, the Diözesan-Museum Graz, the Museum der Wahrnehmung and Camera Austria, while the Kunsthaus Graz answers all of them in glass.

What is the history of Innere Stadt?

Styria's capital grew from this ground. Innere Stadt is the first of the city's districts and the piece of the Old Town that the Schloßberg overlooks, the hill whose fortifications shaped everything laid out beneath it. Palais Herberstein and Palais Khuenburg record the noble town houses.

The Castle of Graz, the Katharinenkirche und Mausoleum and the Emperor Franz I monument each fix a different century onto the same handful of streets, and the Adler-Befreiungs-Denkmal marks a later one again, while the Glacis traces where the defences once ran.

Where is Innere Stadt?

The Mur bounds Innere Stadt between the Radetzkybrücke and the Keplerbrücke, with the Schloßberg rising inside it and the Stadtpark along its rim.
