What is the history of Baumgarten?
The name reaches back to 1200. Baumgarten kept a rural character of farms and vineyards into the 19th century, drawing summer guests out from Vienna who built residences here, among them the house known as Baumgarten Castle. Ober- and Unterbaumgarten merged in 1850.
The village lost its independence in 1891, joining Hütteldorf, Penzing, Breitensee and Hadersdorf-Weidlingau to form the 14th district, and the castle came down in 1890 to make room for a school.
