The Rochusmarkt end is the useful one. Erdberg runs from there out along the Erdbergstraße, and a bed anywhere near the Kardinal-Nagl-Platz puts the Innere Stadt within a short ride and the Rabenhof within a walk. Gemeindebauten fill the lower part.
Neuerdberg has the densest run of them inside the Gürtel after the Margaretengürtel, which is a particular kind of Vienna rather than a quiet one. The Fiakerplatz marks the middle of Alt-Erdberg.

What are the main landmarks in Erdberg?
The oldest Roman finds in Vienna came out of this ground. They were dug north of the Rochusmarkt, by the Grete-Jost-Park at the start of the Erdbergstraße and on the site of the Austrian Post headquarters, and they include Celtic pit houses, wells and ovens from the middle of the first century alongside imported amphorae from the Adriatic. Later layers run to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
The Rabenhof is the best known of the Gemeindebauten. Vienna built it between the wars on land in Neuerdberg that fell to the city after the First World War, and the protection zones around it also take in the Alt-Erdberg parish church, the Hanuschhof, the Salesianum and the tram depot. A pilgrimage chapel survives inside the flats.
It was built in 1815 for the Magna Mater Austriae, a copy of the Mariazell image, and the Leonhardgasse blocks went up around it rather than over it.
What is the history of Erdberg?
Erdberg is among the oldest settlements in the Vienna area. Its first record comes from the twelfth century, as Ertpurch, and the name was later written Erpurch, Erdburg and Erdberg, after a fortified ring wall thrown up in the early Middle Ages around what are now the Erdbergstraße, the Kardinal-Nagl-Platz, the Hainburger Straße and the Schlachthausgasse. Strawberries have nothing to do with it, whatever the coat of arms suggests.
Richard the Lionheart was taken prisoner here in 1192 on his way back from the Third Crusade. Low German gardeners founded a hamlet called Nottendorf on Erdberg ground, and the first Turkish siege destroyed it completely in 1529, after which it was never rebuilt. Vegetables displaced the vines.
Erdberg stayed a princely holding for centuries, passed to the Vienna magistrate in 1810, and came into the city in 1850 with the suburbs Weißgerber and Landstraße as the Landstraße district.
