It never disappeared into the city. Hetzendorf lies a good way from the district centre and was not swallowed by the sea of houses, so it has kept its identity as a mostly loosely built residential quarter in greenery. Two to three square kilometres is its extent.
That is the area given for the Bezirksteil, which was one of the oldest villages on the southern edge of Vienna. The Schloss is the fixed point.

A protection zone runs around the palace. The city of Vienna has defined one around Schloss Hetzendorf and along the Schönbrunner Allee, the Strohberggasse and the Schlöglgasse, which is what keeps the loose building pattern in place. The palace gives the quarter its shape.
Streets radiate from it rather than from any market square. Green is the other constant. Hetzendorf has stayed a residential quarter among trees rather than becoming continuous city.
What is the history of Hetzendorf?
The first record is 1114. Hetzendorf appears in a document that year, and in 1190 Henricus von Hetzendorf received the territory as a princely fief. Independence came after 1848.
It was a commune of its own in Lower Austria from then until the decision of 1890, which took effect on 1 January 1892 when it was incorporated into Vienna as part of the 12th district, Meidling. Distance preserved it. Because the place lies well away from the district centre and never vanished into the built-up mass of the city, it has kept its local identity as a loosely built residential quarter in greenery.
Protection made that formal. The city defined a building protection zone around the Schloss and along the Schönbrunner Allee, the Strohberggasse and the Schlöglgasse.
