The whole district sits inside the Ringstraße, so any bed here puts you a short walk from the Hofburg Palace. It is compact. The old town traditionally split into four quarters, the Stubenviertel in the northeast, the Kärntner Viertel in the southeast, the Widmerviertel in the southwest, and the Schottenviertel in the northwest, and those names still track how each corner feels.
Base yourself near the Kärntner Viertel for the main shopping street and the opera, or pick the quieter Schottenviertel to stay close to the Austrian National Library. Rooms sit close together, so choose by the nearest landmark. From here the outer parts of Vienna are minutes away by tram along the Ring.

What are the main landmarks in Innere Stadt?
The Hofburg Palace anchors the district, the former imperial seat whose wings also hold the Albertina and the Austrian National Library. A short walk through the old lanes reaches the Baroque dome of St. Peter's Church. St. Michael's Church stands by the palace.
Across the Ring, the Kunsthistorisches Museum keeps the imperial art collections, while the MAK, Museum of Applied Arts marks the eastern edge of the old town. The Mozarthaus Vienna, the composer's surviving apartment, sits in the lanes east of the centre.
What is the history of Innere Stadt?
The district grew from Vindobona, the Roman military camp that first fixed a settlement here. For centuries the walled old town and the city of Vienna were one and the same, a boundary that held until the municipal expansion of 1850. Four quarters divided the space inside the walls, each named for a town gate, the Stubenviertel, the Kärntner Viertel, the Widmerviertel, and the Schottenviertel.
Then the walls fell. From 1858 the fortifications came down, and the broad Ringstraße rose in their place, lined with the grand public buildings of the imperial capital. That layered core is why the historic centre carries UNESCO World Heritage standing.
