What are the main landmarks in Neuwaldegg?

Schloss Neuwaldegg went up between 1692 and 1706 for Graf Theodor von Strattmann, and in 1765 Feldmarschall Franz Moritz von Lacy bought the estate and laid out around it the first English landscape garden in Austria. The mausoleum he built for himself in 1794 still stands in what is now the Schwarzenbergpark, roughly 80 hectares of wood and clearing that the City of Vienna bought in 1958 and opened to the public. Lacy was buried here in 1801.

Higher up, at the city boundary in the Wienerwald, one hut survives of the Hameau, the seventeen reed cottages he joined with covered walks. The Höhenstraße begins in Neuwaldegg as well, and the Artariastraße carries the rest of the protected street frontage.

What is the history of Neuwaldegg?

Neuwaldegg was settled later than the villages around it, and its record opens with a single purchase. After the first Turkish siege of Vienna was lifted, the imperial councillor Stefan Agler bought a farmstead and a stretch of idle garden ground in a tract then called Ober-Dornbach, and in 1530 he was given leave to build on it; he named the holding Neuwaldegger Hof, and Ferdinand I raised it to a noble seat in 1537. In 1890 Neuwaldegg counted 355 people.

The law that took force on 1 January 1892 folded the village and its 75 houses in with Dornbach and Hernals to make Vienna's 17th district. Ludwig Wittgenstein's parents kept a house at Neuwaldegger Straße 38, and the city's address record places him there in 1889 and again in 1939.

Neuwaldegg takes in 385.91 hectares of the Wienerwald along Vienna's north-western rim, reaching from the Heuberg in the south-west up to the Dreimarkstein on the Salmannsdorf boundary, with Dornbach adjoining to the south-east.
