Coogee's landmarks are its beach and the ocean pools cut into the rocks around it. Water is the theme. Wylie's Baths, at the southern headland, is a tidal pool on a timber deck above the sea, and McIver's Ladies Baths nearby keeps a pool reserved for women and children.
Ross Jones Memorial Pool sits on the sand itself, behind a low sandstone wall. Coogee Oval, just inland, is the local sports ground for Randwick's rugby and cricket clubs, and offshore the reef of Wedding Cake Island breaks the swell.
What is the history of Coogee?
The name Coogee comes from a local Aboriginal word for the smell of seaweed drying on the shore. Seaweed gave it the name. Through the late nineteenth century the beach grew into a seaside resort, reached first by horse-bus and then by tram from central Sydney.
A domed pleasure palace with an aquarium opened above the sand in the 1880s, in the building that later became the Coogee Pavilion. A pier modelled on English seaside piers reached out over the water in 1928 but stood for only a few years, while Wylie's Baths, cut into the southern rocks, opened in 1907.
Where is Coogee?
Coogee lies in Sydney's eastern suburbs, within the City of Randwick. Cliffs frame each end of its bay. Randwick sits inland to the west; Clovelly and Gordons Bay meet the coast to the north, while Maroubra lies south beyond the cliffs.
