The Australian National Maritime Museum stands on the Pyrmont waterfront at the head of Darling Harbour, its collection spilling out onto the wharf. Moored alongside is HMAS Vampire, the destroyer visitors can board and walk through. The Star rises a little further along the shore, a casino and entertainment block that doubles as the suburb's landmark.

What is the history of Pyrmont?
Pyrmont shares its name with Bad Pyrmont, a spa town in Germany, borrowed after a spring was found on the peninsula. Through the 19th century the headland was quarried for its yellow sandstone and lined with wool stores, refineries, and finger wharves that worked Sydney's cargo trade. The Pyrmont Bridge was built across the harbour to link the peninsula to the city.
Then the port trade faded. The warehouses stood empty until the 1990s, when they were converted into apartments and offices, and The Star opened on the old industrial shore.
Where is Pyrmont?
The suburb occupies a narrow peninsula between Darling Harbour to the east and the bays of Blackwattle and Johnstons to the west. Ultimo adjoins it to the south, and the redeveloped Barangaroo waterfront faces it across the harbour. Harris Street is the main north-south thoroughfare, threading from the Pyrmont Bay waterfront back toward Ultimo.
