Staying in The Rocks puts you within walking distance of Circular Quay, the ferry wharves and head-on views of Sydney Cove. The precinct suits sightseers who want the harbour, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and the climb over the Sydney Harbour Bridge at their doorstep, and who don't mind a lively pub scene after dark. A handful of historic hotels and boutique properties occupy converted sandstone buildings along and above George Street.
Rooms here are few. Travellers wanting more choice can base themselves in the wider Sydney city centre, a few minutes south on foot.

What are the main landmarks in The Rocks?
The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia anchors the Circular Quay end of the precinct, its Art Deco block facing the water. Every weekend The Rocks Markets fill the cobbled length of George Street and the lanes that branch off it. On the foreshore stands Cadmans Cottage, one of the oldest surviving houses in Sydney.
Sydney Observatory crowns Observatory Hill just above the precinct, in the adjoining suburb of Millers Point. The Sydney Opera House fills the view across the cove. It is a short stroll.
What is the history of The Rocks?
The Rocks grew from the first European settlement in Australia, laid out on the rocky western shore of Sydney Cove when the First Fleet landed in 1788. Convicts quarried the sandstone underfoot to raise the stores, cottages and pubs that still define the streets. For a century it was a working harbourside slum of sailors, wharf labourers and the notorious Rocks 'push' gangs.
St Philip's Church, Sydney, the colony's first parish, rose on Church Hill at its southern edge. Plague and demolition schemes nearly erased the quarter before conservation campaigns saved its sandstone terraces. Much survives.
Where is The Rocks?
The Rocks occupies the headland on the western side of Sydney Cove, immediately north of the city centre. George Street runs the length of the precinct, spilling into cobbled side lanes that climb the sandstone ridge behind the waterfront. The Sydney Harbour Bridge springs from its northern end, while Walsh Bay and Millers Point adjoin it to the west.
Circular Quay sits just to the south. It is a small precinct.
