About Glebe
What are the main landmarks in Glebe?
Glebe has no single famous monument. Its landmark is really Glebe Point Road itself, a kilometre of cafes, old pubs, and the antiquarian and second-hand bookshops the suburb is known for. Every Saturday the Glebe Markets take over the grounds of Glebe Public School.
At the northern tip, foreshore parks run along Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay to the water's edge at Glebe Point. The city's big museums lie a short light-rail ride east in central Sydney.
What is the history of Glebe?
The suburb's name is a plain description of what the land once was. A glebe is an area held by the church to support a parish priest, and this ground was granted to the Church of England in the early years of the Sydney colony. Through the nineteenth century the estate was subdivided, first into large villas and then into the rows of Victorian terraces that still define the streets.
Working-class for generations, Glebe later drew students and writers, helped along by the neighbouring University of Sydney. The bookshops and old pubs remain.
Where is Glebe?
Glebe sits on a peninsula in Sydney's inner west, three kilometres from the city centre. Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay lie north. Wattle Street draws the eastern boundary with Ultimo, and Parramatta Road runs along the southern flank past the University of Sydney.
Glebe Point Road threads the whole suburb, from the Broadway end down to Glebe Point on the water, with Forest Lodge adjoining to the south.
