What is the history of Glebe?
The suburb's name is a plain description of what the land once was. A glebe is an area held by the church to support a parish priest, and this ground was granted to the Church of England in the early years of the Sydney colony. Through the nineteenth century the estate was subdivided, first into large villas and then into the rows of Victorian terraces that still define the streets.
Working-class for generations, Glebe later drew students and writers, helped along by the neighbouring University of Sydney. The bookshops and old pubs remain.

Glebe sits on a peninsula in Sydney's inner west, three kilometres from the city centre. Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay lie north. Wattle Street draws the eastern boundary with Ultimo, and Parramatta Road runs along the southern flank past the University of Sydney.
