The name is older than the town. Zandvliet enters the record in 1135 as Santflit, which reads as a navigable passage through sand, and the description fits a settlement built where water found its way across low ground. It grew into a town of its own.
That independence ended when Antwerp took in the northern villages, folding Zandvliet together with Berendrecht and Lillo into a single district.
