Gorna banya grew around its mineral springs, tended in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by a small rural community that guarded the baths, the forest, and the grazing land above the village. The name records that trade. In the seventeenth century the surrounding estate was held by Shah Sultan, a daughter of Sultan Selim II, and the spring water was first studied and described in 1887 before the village was drawn into the growing capital as a Sofia district in 1938.
Bottling followed the fame. The Gorna banya springs were tapped for bottled mineral water that carried the quarter's name well beyond the western edge of Sofia.
