Tancredo Neves is one of the largest and most crowded bairros of the miolo central, and it is housing rather than a place to visit. It begins where the Estrada das Barreiras runs out, at the spot known as the Curva da Morte, and reaches to the boundary with Arenoso. Prefeitura-Bairro VIII covers it together with Cabula.

The Curva da Morte is the point everyone knows, where the Estrada das Barreiras ends. It runs on to Arenoso. Its real landmark is not built: this is historic ground of Black resistance, the old Quilombo do Cabula.
What is the history of Tancredo Neves?
The bairro was called Beiru, after Gbeiru, remembered as Preto Beiru, a Yoruba man taken from Oyo in what is now Nigeria and enslaved in Brazil, who is said to have lived here in the nineteenth century. The name survives. Its origins lie in the Quilombo do Cabula, a territory of resistance for enslaved people of African origin in colonial Brazil.
The sixth Conde da Ponte, colonial administrator of the Captaincy of Bahia and heir to the morgadio of the Casa da Ponte, put down that resistance violently early in the nineteenth century.

Tancredo Neves lies in the miolo central of Salvador, away from both the coast and the old city. Arenoso adjoins it. The bairro is one of the largest in that middle belt.
