Staying downtown puts a visitor a short walk from most of Vancouver's offices, restaurants, and the Coal Harbour waterfront. Hotels cluster thickest around Robson Street and the West End, steps from the Vancouver Art Gallery, the stores of West Georgia Street, and the piers along Burrard Inlet. The area suits sightseeing.
Stanley Park, Coal Harbour, and Gastown all sit within an easy walk. For a calmer base, the West End's older apartment blocks hold guesthouses a few streets back from the shops.

What are the main landmarks in Downtown Vancouver?
The Vancouver Art Gallery sits at the district's core, in the former provincial courthouse on Robson Square. To the east, the Chinese Canadian Museum and the Chinatown Storytelling Centre trace the neighbourhood's Chinese heritage, and the Vancouver Police Museum keeps its records nearby. Churches punctuate the grid.
Among them stand the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, Coastal Church, and St Andrew's-Wesley United Church. The Vancouver Lookout gives a high view over Burrard Inlet. Stanley Park and its Vancouver Aquarium close the peninsula to the west.
What is the history of Downtown Vancouver?
The city grew outward from Hastings Mill, a sawmill that opened on the south shore of Burrard Inlet in the 1860s. The settlement of Granville, known as Gastown, grew up beside it. Fire levelled the wooden town in 1886.
Vancouver was incorporated as a city that same year, and the Canadian Pacific Railway soon ran its line to the harbour, pulling banks, warehouses, and offices onto the downtown grid. Stone and brick blocks replaced the early timber, and the core filled in toward Coal Harbour and False Creek.
Where is Downtown Vancouver?
The district covers the northern half of Vancouver's downtown peninsula, with Burrard Inlet and Coal Harbour along its north shore. False Creek closes off the south side, and the West End leads west toward Stanley Park. Chinatown sits at its eastern edge.
