The old blocks are gone, and the viaducts leave little room for hotels, so visitors who want to walk its ground book in adjacent Chinatown, in Gastown, or elsewhere across downtown Vancouver. A short walk links the Chinatown Storytelling Centre and the Chinese Canadian Museum, with Science World just around the head of False Creek.
The quarter suits travellers drawn to Vancouver's layered past rather than nightlife, since it falls quiet once the museums close. For a wider choice of beds, the downtown core sits to the west.

What is the history of Hogan's Alley, Vancouver?
Vancouver's Black community took shape around Hogan's Alley early in the twentieth century, drawn by work on the railways and along the waterfront. Italian and Chinese families shared the lanes. Vie's Chicken and Steak House became the best-known gathering spot, and Nora Hendrix, grandmother of the musician Jimi Hendrix, was among its long-standing figures.
From the late 1960s the city cleared the blocks to raise the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts, part of a freeway plan that was never finished. The community scattered, and the name survived the buildings.
