What is the history of West Point Grey?
The Point Grey peninsula was charted in 1792 and named for Captain George Grey, a friend of the navigator George Vancouver. West Point Grey itself filled in during the early twentieth century, growing as a streetcar suburb as tracks pushed west along West 10th Avenue. For decades Jericho Beach held a Royal Canadian Air Force seaplane station, its flying boats working out of English Bay.
The base later closed. Its grounds passed into public hands and became the parkland that lines the shore.
Where is West Point Grey?
The neighbourhood fills the northwest shoulder of Vancouver, bounded on the east by Alma Street, which forms the line between it and Kitsilano. Its northern shore steps down to Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach, and Spanish Banks along English Bay. Westward, the streets give way to Pacific Spirit Regional Park and the University Endowment Lands.
Point Grey Road runs the waterfront.
