What are the main landmarks in Huangpu District?
The Nanhai God Temple is counted as the birthplace of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, and on Changzhou stands the former site of the Whampoa Military Academy, called the cradle of China's generals. Lingnan architecture survives at the Yuyan Academy. Shuxiang Street in Hengsha, the old houses of Shenjing, and the old village of Liantang keep it too.
What is the history of Huangpu District?
The name is usually traced to the stretch of the Pearl River in front of the Nanhai God Temple, once called Huangmu Bay, which local speech turned from Huangmu into Huangpu. During the Canton trade Changzhou was known as Dane's Island. Danish crews used it for repairs and burials.
The Whampoa Military Academy was founded on the island in 1924, and in 1984 the State Council approved the Guangzhou Economic Development Zone, one of the first in China. Luogang joined Huangpu on 12 February 2014.
Where is Huangpu District?
Huangpu District covers 480.56 square kilometres, the old Huangpu of 90.95 square kilometres joined to the former Luogang District. Despite its name, it does not include Huangpu Island, now Pazhou in Haizhu District, or that island's famous anchorage. The island of Changzhou does belong to it.
The government sits on Xiangxue 3rd Road.
