Nansha sprawls across reclaimed delta land, so where you settle turns on what sits at your door. Jiaomen holds the district core. Around Jiaomen the offices, the shopping streets and the metro terminus cluster together, and the waterfront opens onto the Pearl River just beyond.
Travellers passing through the harbour bed down closer to Nansha Port, within reach of the container terminals and the ferry piers. Quieter rooms gather near Nansha Wetland Park, out among the mangroves and tidal channels of the estuary. Settle to suit the delta district you're after.

What are the main landmarks in Nansha District?
Nansha leans on water. Tianhou Palace rises in tiers up Dajiao Hill above the estuary, a large sea-goddess temple facing the Lingdingyang where the Pearl River empties into the sea. The wilder ground lies out on the tidal flats.
Nansha Wetland Park spreads mangroves, ponds and reed channels that draw migrating waterbirds each winter, while the deep-water quays of Nansha Port line the shipping lanes with gantry cranes and container stacks. Hengli and Wanqingsha, raised from reclaimed marsh, carry the newer town streets, and the long span of Nansha Bridge crosses the Pearl River toward the far Humen shore.
What is the history of Nansha District?
Nansha grew out of sand and silt. Much of its ground is reclaimed marsh, land the Pearl River laid down as it dropped its sediment at the sea, and the district's older heart clustered around the Tianhou Palace shrine on Dajiao Hill. Guangzhou set the area apart as its own district in 2005, carving Nansha from Panyu to steer the port and the reclaimed flats as a single administration.
The harbour changed the pace. Deep-water berths at Nansha Port drew shipping down from the crowded upstream wharves, and the reclaimed towns of Hengli and Wanqingsha filled the marsh with streets and industry.

Nansha fills roughly 695 square kilometres of low, reclaimed delta at the southern tip of Guangzhou, where the Pearl River splits into channels and empties through the Lingdingyang into the sea.
