About Panyu District

Where to stay in Panyu District
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Panyu spreads wide, so where you settle turns on what you want at your door. Shiqiao holds the district core. Around Shiqiao the shops, the government offices and the older lanes cluster close, and Panyu Square sits just south with the metro underneath.
The resort crowd instead beds down near Chimelong, within walking reach of its parks and circus. Beds also gather beside Guangzhou South railway station for anyone changing trains across the Pearl River Delta. Choose the part of Panyu that suits you.
About Panyu District
What are the main landmarks in Panyu District?
Panyu leans on its gardens and hills. Yuyin Garden, one of the four great gardens of Guangdong, keeps its Qing-era courtyards intact, while Baomo Garden lays out ponds, bridges and Lingnan carving across a later re-created estate. The old ground runs deeper than that.
Lotus Hill carries an ancient stone quarry and the tall Sea-Viewing Guanyin above the water, and Shawan preserves a market town of ancestral halls and grey-brick lanes. Chimelong pulls the modern crowd with its safari park and circus, and the Panyu Museum and Dafushan Forest Park round out the district's reach.
What is the history of Panyu District?
Panyu is one of the oldest names in the region. Its territory passed under Guangzhou's administration as Panyu County in 1975, and in 1992 the county became a county-level city while staying tied to Guangzhou. The name outlasted every change.
On 10 July 2000 the county-level city was reorganised into Panyu District, folding it fully into the wider city, and older places such as Shawan and the market lanes of Shiqiao carried their ancestral halls and gardens through the shift. Yuyin Garden, raised in 1871, still stands from the Qing years.
Where is Panyu District?
Panyu fills roughly 530 square kilometres of low delta land south of central Guangzhou, threaded by channels of the Pearl River Delta and rising only at Lotus Hill and Dafushan Forest Park.
