About Chengde
Chengde is the summer capital of the Qing.
What is Chengde known for?
In a valley of the Hebei mountains north of Beijing, the emperors built a vast walled park to escape the heat and receive the lords of Mongolia and Tibet, and around it rose eight great temples in the Tibetan style, chief among them a Little Potala. Palace and temples fill the hills. The Qing came here each summer.
What are the main landmarks in Chengde?
The Mountain Resort is the glory of Chengde. The vast imperial park, walled like a small Great Wall, holds lakes and palaces and wooded hills where the emperors summered, the emblem of the city, north of the town. Tibetan temples ring the valley.
The Putuo Zongcheng, a smaller Potala of red and white, climbs its hillside, while Puning temple shelters a giant wooden Guanyin above Chengde.
What is the history of Chengde?
Chengde grew as the summer seat of the Qing emperors. In the eighteenth century the great emperors Kangxi and Qianlong built a huge walled garden of lakes, hills, and halls in this cool valley, and made it their court for the hot months, ruling the empire from the north. The place was more than a garden.
Here the emperors met the chiefs of the Mongols and the Tibetan lamas, and bound the frontier peoples to the throne with feasts and hunts. Temples rose to honour the frontier faiths. Around the resort the Qing raised eight great temples in the styles of Tibet and Mongolia, among them a copy of the Potala of Lhasa and a hall around a towering wooden Guanyin.
The court left when the dynasty weakened. In the last century the emperors came no more, and the palace and temples were left to the mountain quiet. The old park still fills its valley.

Where is Chengde?
Chengde lies in the mountains of northern Hebei in China, on the Wulie river north of Beijing. The city sits in a narrow valley among rocky hills, at the edge of the grassland steppe, where strange rock pillars stand above the town. Bare crags rise around.
A great section of the Wall runs the ridges nearby.
What is the climate of Chengde?
Chengde has a cool, dry mountain climate. Warm summers draw the mountain breezes that once cooled the emperors, and cold winters bring frost and snow off the northern steppe, drier and clearer than the plain below. The summer air stays cool in the hills.
Winter grips the valley hard.
How do you get to Chengde?
Chengde lies in northern Hebei, northeast of Beijing in the mountains. Fast trains and the expressway climb to it from Beijing through the hills, and roads run on to the grasslands and the Great Wall at Jinshanling. Mountain roads thread out to the temple valleys.
Many reach it on a day's trip from Beijing.
