What is the history of Qinhuangdao?
Qinhuangdao is named for the First Emperor of China. Long ago the emperor Qin Shi Huang came to this coast, it is said, seeking the islands of the immortals and the elixir of long life, and the place took his name. Emperors sought the sea.
Later rulers too came to the shore to gaze at the ocean, and the coast kept its fame as a place of emperors and legend. The Wall reached the sea here. When the Ming built their great Wall, they ended it on this coast at the pass of Shanhaiguan, and raised the Old Dragon's Head to carry the Wall into the waves.
The pass held the gate to the north. For centuries Shanhaiguan guarded the road between the plains of China and the lands beyond the Wall, and in modern times Qinhuangdao grew as a coal port and the summer beaches of Beidaihe drew crowds from afar. The Wall still runs to the sea.
