The Bund sets the tone. Its parade of stone facades lines the Huangpu River, and behind them the district packs its museums tight: the Shanghai Museum on People's Square, the Rockbund Art Museum near the old wharf, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai in the park. History runs deeper inland.
The Dajing Ge Pavilion survives from the vanished city wall of old Shanghai, while the Site of the First Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen mark the years the modern state was argued into being. Moore Memorial Church anchors the square.
What is the history of Huangpu District?
Old Shanghai grew here. A walled Chinese town stood inland while foreign traders raised the Bund along the Huangpu River, and the two worlds pressed against each other across a single stretch of Huangpu until the walls came down and the Dajing Ge Pavilion was left as their last fragment. The district later drew the men who would remake the country.
Sun Yat-sen kept a home in these streets. In 1921 a lane house here hosted the Site of the First Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.
Where is Huangpu District?
Huangpu occupies a compact 20 square kilometres of central Shanghai, wrapped along the west bank of the Huangpu River where the Bund bends with the current. The river defines its edge.
