What is the history of Pudong?
The name Pudong once meant only the Huangpu's east bank, the land directly across from Puxi, the historic core of Shanghai. It was a riverbank, not a district. In 1993 the wider Pudong New Area was established as a state-level new area, extending the name eastward across the countryside toward the East China Sea.
What had been a bank opposite the old city grew into a formal district of Shanghai.
