What is the history of Songjiang?
Long before the harbour cranes rose downstream, this was the seat of Songjiang Prefecture, the imperial administration that governed much of what is now Shanghai. The name carried through Songjiang County and the older romanization Sungkiang before the modern district took shape. Water made the place.
The channels of the Pine River fed the fields, moved the barges, and set the low grid of the old county town that the Songjiang Museum still records.
